Cinema Nova Film Night was a great success !
We are delighted to report that on Tuesday 9th August, the day after Lewis’ 2nd birthday and the day before Katrina’s birthday, we welcomed in excess of 200 people comprising family, friends and well wishers to the Cinema Nova in Carlton to celebrate the first ‘official’ fundraiser for Katrina’s Sparkle.
‘The Illusionist’ proved to be a popular selection for the night with many favourable comments, especially from the ladies, who appreciated the subtlety, humour, pathos and exquisite animation in this delightful French film.
The Cinema provided an excellent environment for everyone to ‘catch up’ prior to the film showing and conversation was rife as friends, both old and new, came together in a spirit of fun to show support for Katrina’s memory .
Jo outlined how funds raised on the night (almost $5,000) would be donated to ‘Room to Read’, a not for profit, global organisation established by John Wood, a former executive of Microsoft, who in ten short years has enabled over 5 million children to have access to books and libraries in Nepal and other educationally deprived countries across Asia and Africa.
As a result of the fantastic support on the night, and from family and friends unable to attend, we are thrilled to confirm that a reading room will be built in the village of Lamjung an area identified by ‘Room to Read’ as being a high priority and close to the area that Simon and Katrina trekked together on the Annapurna Circuit back in 1999. Coincidentally, it was around that very time that John Wood visited Nepal for the first time and discovered the enormity of the plight of so many children being unable to learn to read due to lack of access to books.
As the reading room is being built and established, it is our plan to keep the website updated with progress- it will truly be a wonderful legacy to Katrina and the love she had for both the children and the region in a part of the world she so admired.
Thankyou all for your ongoing love and support .
